Energy Transition in Africa: Building Parliamentarians Capacity for Action Towards COP28

Background
The Climate Vulnerable Forum Global Parliamentary Group (CVF GPG) is co-hosting a workshop on “Energy Transition in Africa: Building Parliamentarians Capacity for Action Towards COP28” with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Regional Programme Energy Security Climate Change in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the African Parliamentary Network for Climate Action (APNCA) with the support of the Global Renewables Congress to ensure that African parliamentarians play a leading role in championing the African interest on the energy transition agenda ahead of the COP28 global climate talks. The workshop is targeted towards African parliamentarians who are members of the APNCA, African parliamentarians who are Climate Change Champions of the CVF GPG and Observers from potential partners.
The program is intended to allow the review and updating of the African energy transition position paper developed ahead of COP27: African Priorities under the Shifting Geopolitics of Energy, raise awareness and build capacity among African parliamentarians on the global energy transition and the priorities for Africa while sharing best practices and country-level experiences. The workshop is also intended to empower African parliamentarians to take an active role in advancing Africa’s interests in the green energy transition; strengthen APNCA as a strategic African Parliamentary voice for the continent’s energy agenda and brief African parliamentarians on Climate Prosperity Plans (CPPs) and their potential as tools for driving the green energy transition. As such, it would help to guide African Parliamentarians on mainstreaming CPPs in the legislative function to be able to identify and evaluate national legislative instruments against the key measures and KPIs of the CPPs to identify gaps and develop recommendations for reform.
Expected outputs:
- Enhanced understanding of global energy transition and the African priorities among African parliamentarians;
- Increased knowledge and understanding of role of African parliamentarians and how they can contribute to achieving African interests in the green energy transition;
- Enhanced strategy for APNCA to push for African voice on global energy talks;
- Updated African Parliamentarians position paper on energy transition ahead of COP28; and
- Enhanced understanding of African parliamentarians on Climate Prosperity Plans and their potential to drive the green energy transition in Africa.
The workshop is an in-person event taking place in Accra, Ghana from 4-5 May 2023.
