ABOUT THIS EVENT

Members of the Climate Vulnerable Forum Global Parliamentary Group will participate in the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) legislators forum to pursue the goal of  ensuring a more sustainable energy transition through international cooperation. The Forum is taking place during  the 13th session of the IRENA Assembly. The event will be held on 13 January 2023 from 10.00 to 12.30 GST at the St. Regis Hotel, Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi.

The IRENA Legislators Forum gathers a global network of parliamentary champions of renewable energy with an interest in achieving a low-carbon, climate-resilient world, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. It presents a unique opportunity for parliamentarians to engage with experts, share best practices with counterparts and contribute to the global discussion on accelerating the energy transition at national, regional and international levels.

The event focuses on the rapid adoption of renewable energy sources which has sparked a profound change in the world’s energy landscape. Given its fundamental role in giving the power system flexibility and enabling the integration of more renewables, the session aims to discuss green hydrogen potential. As green hydrogen continues to receive a lot of attention in this context, green hydrogen can offer a workable solution for meeting decarbonization targets while also supporting the implementation of national and international commitments made under the Paris Agreement.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the event includes offering a platform for legislators to have a diversified discussion on the role of green hydrogen strategies in encouraging early adoption of laws to promote the supply and demand of green hydrogen, including local, regional, and global cooperation. The Forum will allow discussions on new opportunities that could arise from partnership possibilities in establishing local value chains, encouraging the decarbonization of industries, creating new jobs, and ensuring greater social equity. The Forum will create an output document with recommendations on how parliamentary and regulatory actions aimed at fostering green hydrogen deployment can be adjusted and tailored for particular countries depending on their context and priorities outside the energy system, such as economic development goals, in collaboration with IRENA experts and committed legislators.
